What matters most when sizing a motorcycle shock absorber is not a single dimension, but a combination of measurements that determine fitment, ride height, and mounting compatibility.
Eye-to-eye length determines the motorcycle’s rear ride height baseline and suspension geometry. A longer shock typically raises the rear of the motorcycle, while a shorter one lowers it. This directly affects steering response, cornering clearance, and high-speed stability.
Mount type is the next critical factor because it determines how measurements are taken and how the shock connects to the frame and swingarm. Many motorcycles use eyelet mounts at both ends, while others use a clevis (fork-style mount) or stud-type connection. Regardless of mount design, measurements should always be taken from bolt center to bolt center.
Equally important are the mounting interface dimensions: bushing inner diameter (bolt size), mounting width, and spacer configuration. Incorrect mounting dimensions can prevent proper bolt torque and alignment, even if the shock length is correct.Standard universal shocks typically feature 10mm or 12mm bushings. Eye-to-eye length is measured from the center of one mounting bolt hole to the center of the other, with the shock fully extended. A change that sounds small on paper can be big on the road.
Add even 10 mm to shock length and the rear can sit noticeably higher, which can steepen steering and change lean angle. Go shorter and you might gain a little reach to the ground, but risk scraping sooner in turns. Either direction can also affect chain or belt tension because the swingarm angle changes as ride height shifts.
If your shock has a clevis or fork mount, measure from the mounting bolt centerline in the clevis to the centerline of the other mounting bolt — not to the end of the clevis.
Tip: Write the result in both mm and inches. Many sellers list only one unit, and converting later can lead to mistakes.
